Finding A Doula: What Sets Us Apart

When we first started considering phasing out our agency and transitioning to a doula matching service, we had a lot of questions about how it would work and if it would be sustainable. One of the biggest joys in running our doula agency was having the opportunity to get to know our clients and support them through their entire journey. And while we knew we weren’t the first doula agency to have to pivot after independent contractor laws changed (nor would we be the last!) ultimately it was important to us that we didn’t lose the opportunity to connect with those searching for a doula in Orange County.

One of the biggest things that sets us apart from referral services is that personal connection that makes finding a doula so important. That is why we strive to get to know you, not only because we love hearing about you and what you want out of your birth/postpartum experience, but because it helps us make those matches made in doula heaven. By learning more about you and your care needs we can confidently match you with doulas who’ll you have good chemistry with (‘cause let’s face it, finding a doula is kind of like dating) and who will be able to support you in the ways that you need and want.

She Smiles: A Postpartum Support Story

It is seven o'clock. Her babies will not stop crying. As soon as she gets one of her twins settled, the other baby starts fussing. Laundry and receiving blankets draped over all the furniture, a bottle sticking out from between the couch cushions, and the sink is overflowing with dishes. She needs to make supper, but over the crying and through the fog of exhaustion, she cannot think of what to make.

She sits on the sofa, rocking the twin that she can't seem to soothe; the other sleeps in the bassinette beside her. She lets the tears flow. Postpartum was not supposed to be like this. She thought it would be different. She is not the woman who allows her house to get out of control. She is not the woman that does not shower in... how many days?  But tomorrow is going to be different. Through her tears...

She smiles.

Today she called Doulas of Orange County. Tomorrow her postpartum doula is coming—just one more night of take-out, and tears, and tired.

It was a long night.

Or a short night. It depends on how you look at it.

She dresses. Rather, she changes into more presentable pajamas. The phone rings! Her postpartum doula wants to know if she needs anything from the shops. Milk, diapers... She peers into the almost empty fridge. Everything? No problem. Her postpartum doula will help her with a meal plan and the shopping.

Soon after, her postpartum doula arrives. Both babies are adored, and she heads to the bath for a much-needed soak. She luxuriates in the silence. Just water swishing. She conditions her hair and soaks away the tension. When she is finished in the tub, she takes her time, dressing, styling her hair, a little mascara. She feels human again.

In the kitchen, her postpartum doula has loaded the dishwasher, wiped all the counters, and banished the piles of pizza boxes. There is a pot of tea steeping on the counter and a plate of toast. It is for her. The babies who never sleep at the same time are magically content in their swings, so she curls up in her favorite chair and just watches them be.

Her postpartum doula sits down beside her, and together they plan meals based on family preferences. Her doula will whip up a few things for today from what is left in the house, and tomorrow she will pick up the groceries on her way.

One baby is hungry, and she is more than ready to be close to them again. With her postpartum doula's assistance, she tries a new breastfeeding position. While she feeds her baby, her postpartum doula gathers the laundry, sorts it, and starts the wash. She can do this. She knows it now.

That evening she puts her twins into her carrier the way her postpartum doula showed her. Her husband comes in and is blown away by the difference in her. Somehow, she became even more beautiful the day she became the mother of his children. She serves the stew from the slow cooker, and with the babies in their bassinettes nearby, they watch a movie while they eat.

She looks at her little family. She looks around at the house she has made a home. This is her life. Her beautiful life. This moment is perfect. It is everything she dreamed it would be.

She smiles.

Tips for Good Pregnancy Posture

That pregnancy glow sure looks good on you! But what can you do to help with the aches and pains that come with pregnancy? One of the best ways you can keep your body feeling good is by having good posture throughout the day. Good posture allows your spine, muscles, and ligaments to work the way they were designed to and reduces muscle strain and tension, including tension headaches, and improves circulation, digestion, and lung capacity. But keeping good posture during pregnancy may sound much easier than it is.

A change for the better

When life calls for a pivot, sometimes you’ve just got to listen and go with the flow.

That’s what we were called to do earlier this year when the laws around hiring independent contractors changed in California. If you haven’t read up on it (and the ramifications of it) we encourage you to do so because it’s affecting a lot of industries and a lot of people.

As a doula agency, all of our team members were ICs or independent contractors, which ultimately meant that we as the agency were in charge of booking the clients and then we’d contract the work out to doulas who applied to be a part of our team. This gave our doulas the freedom to accept or decline work as they chose, allowed them to set their own hours and schedule, and provided us the assurance that if our customers weren’t 100% satisfied, that as an agency we could find a solution to ensure their expectations and needs were being met.

But with the passing of AB5 we found ourselves unsure of how we could move forward. According to our attorney, the options were limited but we had to choose one where we were operating within constructs of the new law. One such option was making our doulas employees which we did strongly consider, but ultimately decided against. The reason being that there was no way we could guarantee a certain amount of work each week or month, we didn’t want to micro-manage how doulas provided their services and also because the costs associated with hiring employees would mean that we wouldn’t be able pay our doulas (or ourselves) enough to keep the business running or make it worth everyone’s time and energy.

If you’ve been around for a while, you know that we advocate for doulas charging their worth. Yes, even newly trained doulas. And it didn’t sit right with us to consider reducing wages or reducing the amount of work we could send them each calendar year (which maintaining them as independent contractors would force us to do).

After some brainstorming and more consultations with our incredible attorney, we came up with what we now see as the optimal solution - one that provides Orange County families incredible support and ensures that doulas are paid their worth!

It is an honor to reintroduce Doulas of Orange County… no longer a Doula Agency, now a Doula Matching Service!

With this new approach to care, the cornerstones of Doulas of Orange County have not changed. We still highly vet each team member to make sure they are professional and qualified. We still have the highest standards in the industry to enhance the quality of care you receive. We still mentor and encourage our doulas so they can balance the work-life load that comes with this career. We still strive to get to know the expecting or new parents that are looking for doula support so we can match them with doulas and specialists that meet their families needs.

The main difference in our new matching service and the doula agency is that instead of booking with Doulas of Orange County, we refer inquiries to qualified doulas based on the matching criteria they share with us. From there the inquiring families can choose which doula they want to hire! Each doula pays a membership and referral fee to be a part of our platform and is free to set their own schedule, their own pricing, services and more.

With the doulas setting their own pricing and offering specialty packages and services, we can also cater to a wider variety of budgets. Finances are always a big part of the equation when looking for a doula and with this matching service we can match you with someone within your price range.

Honestly, it is the best of all worlds and we’re so glad to have found this solution!

If you’re interested in being a part of our team, we encourage you to read more about how we operate and apply here.

And if you’re an expecting mom or dad or you just had a baby and are looking for birth and postpartum doulas in Orange County, Long Beach, San Diego or the Inland Empire we would be honored to match you with several amazing doulas or newborn care specialists to interview! We take care of all the vetting, including running background checks and verifying trainings to ensure that the matches you receive are top notch, professional doulas! To start the matching process, fill out our birth and postpartum care questionnaire.

Being forced to pivot isn’t the easiest thing, especially in the middle of an already hectic year (hello pandemic!), but in this case, it has truly been a positive development and one that we’re excited to see flourish. Thank you to our incredible team members who have been patient through this transition and to our badass attorney who guided us through the process.

We’re happy to have the opportunity to stick with doing what we love! Thank you for sticking with us too!
